Raising Funds for Kenya

We have been blessed to watch The Scott kid's grow up! We met Alan and Sherry and their awesome village of 4 about 4.5 years ago while living in Colorado. Their oldest Brooklynn was a shy 14 year old girl. Lauren was 11 and shy as well, but showed some spiciness. Morgan, oh Morgan! She was just 7 and sweet as could be, and so loving! Then there was little Michael, and when I mean little he was only 3!!! I have sweet memories of him attached to Sherry's hip always. These kids have been through a lot. They have moved many times and Joe and I adopted them as our family.

We came to Cumberland Community Church with The Scott's. It has been mine and Joe's pleasure to watch these sweet kids grow and mature in the almost 3 years we have been here. Brooklynn in now 18, and is a beautiful and confident young lady. She is a talented singer and writer as well. Lauren, is now 15 and is funky, and loves to cook and is still spicy! Morgan is 11 and still sweet as pie, and LOVES kids (and they love her1) And, Michael, he just turned 8 ans he is a baseball loving, out going typical younger sibling. I love these kids. I love this family. We have been through a lot together. I love how Sherry and Alan have loved on us, and continue to mentor and teach us so much about raising Godly children. I love how these kids love my Owen and were so excited when we told them we were pregnant! I love them!

Brooklynn is going to Africa with her dad and sister, Lauren. She wrote, and recorded a song for The people of Kenya as a fund raising idea. It's a fun song-very uplifting! Only $1 to buy. Check it out and if you feel so led to donate to her trying to get there to Kenya I know she would appreciate it! Click here to visit Brooklynn's site where you can listen, download and purchase. You should read the lyrics to this song-very gooooood!

On a rainy Tuesday afternoon...

we colored. i printed off some coloring pages from the disney channel's website and owen had fun coloring his favorite manny!

(looking like his cousin grant in this picture!)

Some of O's favorites

Owen is growing up! It is going by so fast, but it is so fun to him cling to certain things and see his little personality develop.

Trains...the boy loves him some trains. All day long I hear "mmmmm choo choo" He loves his wooden train tracks, and all his magnetic Thomas trains. We recently went on to craigslist and asked a random person trying to sell a train table if they couldn't sell their table if they would be willing to donate it to us free-and they did! He has loved putting together the track and tearing it back up on the table. He loves chuggin' the trains along on it. It is so fun!

Blueberries...he could eat a whole carton of blueberries at one sitting of I let him. I am constantly buying them-even when they are so expensive. Besides bananas, and applesauce blueberries are the only fruits he will eat.

Shows...he loves cartoons. I limit him to one show in the morning and one after his nap in the afternoon. His favorites are Curious George and Handy Manny. He has recently started showing interest in Mickey's Clubhouse and will say "Mitty!" Which makes me very excited, because I will take him to Disneyland the next CA trip!!!

Daddy...he is and always has been a daddy's boy.

Charlie...Oh how he loves his dog. Sometimes he is downright mean to Charlie, but he loves him to pieces and I am so glad he has Charlie to grow up with. Charlie is the best dog for this crazy boy!

BOOKS! Owen loves to read! This makes me so happy!!! He will beg me to read to him all through out our day. Sometimes it annoys me, but I remind myself, this is GOOD!!! So, I will stop most anything I am doing to read to that boy. His all time faves right now are "I love you through and through" which he will point to what the book is talking about "i love your eyes" and Owen will point and say "eyes" It melts my heart. He also loves "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" and " Goodnight Moon". Sometimes I will catch him in his room, on the rocker "reading" to himself! I love how Joe and I have read to him since he was in my belly and continue to do so.

He is my sweet special boy and I love him more and more everyday as he learns new things and picks what are his favorites!

we did it!

It has been a long 10 months since I signed up and registered to walk the Atlanta 3 day for breast cancer. We developed a team early on, of 7 amazing women "The Glo Girls": Leah, Brittany, Mary Anthony, Katy, Megan, Julie and myself. All girls from my church. We had a few fundraisers to help us individually hit our goal of $2,300. We exchanged hundreds of emails (and no I am NOT exaggerating on that!) We trained together, not all of us ever at the same time, but we did train. We prepared and encouraged each other when some thought we wouldn't make our fund raising goal, and talked each other down when we thought our heads were going to spin off the week leading up to the event. Most of all we we finished together!

I cannot explain how amazing this experience was. I hope through this post and pictures I do a good job of giving a glimpse of what walking 60 miles for such a wonderful cause looks like. It's one day after the event and it feels like years ago. I'm doing and feeling great! Besides being a little sleepy, my body is doing wonderful and I'm so glad. Even if it didn't feel so great, I would not mind, because that would be nothing compared to having cancer.

Day 1: I woke up at 4:30 so I could meet the girls at the church and head to Lake Lanier Islands. With my peanut butter toast, apples, and chocolate milk on my tummy I threw my bag in the car and took off for my journey. Mary Anthony got a great deal (basically FREE) on a beautiful limo to the event. Us Glo Girls know how to ride in style! =) We anxiously rode to the opening ceremonies with butterflies in our tummies not knowing what the weekend held for us.

Opening ceremonies was beautiful! Instantly I was reminded why I chose to walk. It was inspiring seeing the beautiful flags that read "for my grandmother" "for my mom" "for my sister"... It was touching seeing the women who were displayed in a circle who have struggled, but are now cancer free. It tugged on your heart seeing bald women who are in the midst of treatment walking! Yes, I said they are walking!!! Needless to say it was emotional. Then, it was time to go! With loud music escorting us out, we were on our way to our journey of 60 miles! We were pumped!!

The 3 day organization was amazing, the way they had it mapped out, the way they thought of every detail blew my mind. We approached our first pit stop at about 4 miles. Pit stops included FOOD, drink, and yes port-a-potties! I have never been so excited to see food in my life and it was good! It was our joke by the end that we ate our way thru the 3 day! =) We made sure to stretch and took care of our feet if needed.

As day 1 went on we laughed, we continued to cry, we DANCED and we kept on going. One thing that really discouraged us the week leading up to the walk was the weather forecast. It was NOT pretty, so the night before the walk we were informed that they were moving our camp to an indoor facility. It was supposed to rain on us that whole day...but it didn't! When it did start to rain it wasn't even that bad, it was while in line waiting for the bus as we finished up our day. How amazing is that!?!!!? By the time we got on that bus we were so tired. We looked like zombies after being up since about 4AM and walking all day. We were so looking forward to a hot shower!

When we got to camp we were instructed to eat and hydrate so there would be no passing out in the hot shower we all were looking forward to. How embarrassing would it be to be pulled out naked from the shower! So, that's just what we did. We ate our spaghetti dinner and even got to have diet coke!!!

Shower experience was interesting to say the least...saw a lot of naked boobs and had to set all modesty aside. I think all my team did great with that and figured out how to dress inside the tiny shower stall. The shower felt amazing and I wanted to stay in there all night. Well, maybe not all night, because I was so tired, but a good portion! =)

After our showers we set up our tents. Megan was my tent mate, and a very good tent mate at that! Setting up tents was fun, something I have never done before. It wasn't hard, and we all did it pretty quick. After setting up "camp" we headed to the big tent outside where they had entertainment and fun. We hung out for a little bit, but decided to call it a night and get some much needed rest.

Day 2: Ouch! I woke up soooo sore, thinking "I can't do this!" but by the time I walked to the sink outside to brush my teeth I warmed up and felt great. We ate a scrambled egg breakfast and got in line again for the bus to take us to our starting point. Since, the camp had to be moved indoors there was a lot of busing back and forth. We got to see our first set of familiar faces that morning at a cheering station. Cheer stations were set up through out the route so friends and family could encourage, and well cheer you on! Again, the 3 day walk people so know what they are doing!! Those cheer stations were so great-even if you didn't have anyone you knew cheering you on! Leah's husband and family came to cheer for us and it was so good to see them!

Lunch came somewhat soon after that, and it was so cold and windy. Thankfully our lovely crew had emergency mylar blankets to keep us warm. After lunch we kept on going...we hit up a gas station and I was in heaven with a purchase of a Dr. Pepper!!

We were getting excited because another cheer station was coming and most of our families we going to be there!! I could not wait to get my hands on my boys! It was there before we knew it. We had to wait at a cross walk and when the crossing guard let us go, we took off running for our loved ones. Oh, how wonderful it was to be hugged, loved on, and encouraged by our dear ones. I could see Owen in Joe's arms across the street before we crossed pointing at me...melt melt. After we left the cheering station we were re-energized and knew we could finish day 2 in a good place.

Another dinner and hot shower flew by and we went to bed after dancing to a few songs. Leah and Julie had to visit the Medical Tent to have some blisters tended to, and I had to visit to have my ankles looked at. Turns out I have tendinitis in both of my ankles. The medical team instructed me to come back in the AM and have them wrapped before walking again. On that note I headed back to my tent and slept like a baby.

Day 3: Creeeeeeeek! I was even more sore that morning. I felt like the tin man who needed to be oiled. Yet again all I need was to get moving again and my body felt like it was good to walk the remaining about that day. I visited the medical tent, got one foot taped, and one foot wrapped and met my team for breakfast. It was realllllly cold that morning. Some of my team were wearing beanies, some were wearing hats, all of of us had hand warmers and gloves! Most were familiar with the route, we started in Dunwoody that morning. I still didn't know where we were as I am not familiar with most of Atlanta, but it did feel more familiar, as we were only about 15 minutes from home (driving of course!) We saw more friends an family on the morning cheering station, they were so sweet for coming before church to cheer us on!

As the morning went on I was hurting a bit. My feet were wrapped and they felt very swollen, and I was over compensating so my knee was feeling it. It also was the longest distance between a pit stop and lunch which made it a little harder on the bladder, tummies, and needing to rest. We pushed through and after making it to lunch I perked up a bit. It felt so good to get those shoes off and let my feet rest and air out! I think we had the best turkey sandwich EVER that day! After much rest, we really rested at this stop, as we didn't want to have too much time back at the finish line to wait for the last walkers to finish.

Lunch was done and we headed back out. We were so happy because we only had 4 more miles to go!! We passed through Georgia Tech's campus, Walked passed the capital building, and then we saw the Olympic rings! We were almost there!! We ended at Turner field, Atlanta's baseball stadium. I cannot even put words into how excited and how overwhelming it was when we were done. I have never done a marathon, never done anything like this. It was a huge accomplishment, something I am proud to say I finished. Something that I did that stood for something so good. Something that I did with some wonderful girls, who I will ALWAYS share this memory with.

It was a great experience and I will do again...I'm not sure when but I will walk again, because I can!

Vampires and Werewolves

My name is Jen and I'm a Twilight-oholic! This past summer and the first 2 weeks of October, I read and fell in love with the Twilight Saga. And I will NOT apologize for it! =) I loved it, every single moment of the book. I would read for hours and stay up late just so I could read just a little more Bella and Edward (and Jacob too! =) )

I had no intentions in getting sucked in. I watched the movie early this year when it came on Demand on cable. I think Owen was really sick one Sunday morning and I watched it with him snoozing on my chest. I was surprised on how much I like the movie. I made Joe watch it with me and he liked it too. I loved how the movie captured in a weird way the idea of being pure.

This summer my friend Sarah talked me into reading it and I seriously was hooked. People, I would read a 400+ book in less than a week. All while I was trying to take care of my kid and my husband! I probably neglected each of them in some shape or form, but it was hard not to. I was sucked into such a fun and captivating love story!

I have been done with the last book for almost 2 weeks now, and I feel so lonely =) I miss The Cullens! I have many friends (my age-not teenagers) who equally love the stories as well and I think it's so fun!! And, yes I will be going to see New Moon (the second movie) the day it opens if not shortly after. I'm proud to be a Twilight lover!!

6 more days...

6 more days and I will be meeting my team at the church at 5AM to head over to Lake Lanier to start our 60 mile walk for breast cancer (in a limo at that! We got an awesome deal thanks to Mary Anthony!) 6 more days I will be standing with thousands of women, and some men I imagine, at opening ceremonies nervously awaiting the walk to start. 6 more days I will WALKING with the girls I have trained with for almost a YEAR and it will be for real! 6 more days I will pass and be inspired by several breast cancer survivors cheering ME on to keep walking. 6 more days I will finish my first 19 miles of the 60 we will be walking and return camp to stand in line for hot shower!! 6 more days I will be laying in my cozy sleeping bag, in a tent, with my tent mate Megan exhausted and looking forward to the next day when I get to do it all over again!!

Some might ask why?? Why is she doing this?? And, I would simply answer why not?! I can certainly set aside my non-athletic ability to walk for three days for 60 miles total!! I certainly can set aside my desire not to camp EVER for 2 (probably cold and maybe rainy nights). I can do all these things because it's nothing compared to having cancer. It's nothing compared to hearing a bad diagnoses and having to tell your loved one's about the battle that's to come. It's nothing compared to losing my hair. It's nothing compared to losing my one or both of my breasts. It's nothing! I can do this because so many women fight the battle of this disease, and some don't make it. I can do this for my sister in law, Elizabeth. I can do this!!

Thank you all who have encouraged me through this journey. Thank you all who have donated to my walk. YOU are making a difference. YOU are helping with research, helping women who my not be able to afford a mammogram to get one, you are HELPING!!

Grateful...

This post is dedicated to all my wonderful supporters to my 3 day walk. I am just amazed by the generosity of my family and friends. It has truly floored me seeing the donations roll in, especially in the last week! I have also received donations from people I don't even know-how crazy is that?!?!? It just proves how dear this cause is to many people. Breast cancer is a ugly and mean disease that effects many of us, whether it's a mother, sister, friend or a friend of a friend. I am honored to be able to participate in such an event that raises money to prevent and fight breast cancer.

Here are some pictures from my team's fund raising event at REV coffee. We had an amazing turn out and are so thankful to those who showed up and bought coffee and other treats. 10% of the profits went to our team and there were other BIG donations that were given to our donation jar and to each of us individually. It was a very successful night!!

Thank you again for your donations! I am less than $500 from my goal and am confident I will make my goal by the walk!

The entertainment for the night...awesome!

The wonderful crowd!

Our team...THE GLO GIRLS!
